Highways Development Planning plays an important role in shaping new communities. We do this through our advice on development proposals, influencing place making and ensuring new development is supported by necessary highway and transport infrastructure. We implement the County Council’s transport policy and guidance when responding to planning applications. To do this we review technical documents and plans, such as transport assessments and internal site layout drawings to provide recommendations on planning applications on behalf of the Highway Authority.

The Role:

As an Assistant Transport Planner you will play a key role in supporting the team to provide development planning advice on behalf of the Highway Authority and assisting to achieve the County Council's wider place-shaping approach. You will support the development planning team to drive the delivery of quality development, and associated infrastructure that will also enhance and protect Hampshire unique and valuable natural and historic environment.

You will work closely and collaboratively with colleagues in other teams across the organisation which will enable you to consider how new developments will be accessed and served by all modes of transport along with considering internal site layouts.

What you’ll do:

As an assistant transport planner you will learn how to review planning applications and consider the highway and transport implication of new development proposals. With training and support from the development planning team, you will have responsibility for your own caseload which will require you to review and interpret technical reports and drawings, undertake site visits across Hampshire and provide formal written responses on behalf of the Highway Authority. You will also support the team on strategic projects.

What we’re looking for:

The role will suit somebody who enjoys working in a fast paced environment, is able to prioritise tasks and work efficiently within set timeframes.

With a keen interest in planning, place making and transport, the successful candidate will be able to learn and interpret national and local policy requirements to inform decision making. You will communicate with a wide range of stakeholders including colleagues, developers, the public, local planning authorities and elected members and therefore strong communication skills are a key element of the role.
