Job summary

Heavy Haul Rail in Swindon is seeking an Assistant Train Controller to support real-time management of train services across the network. You will work with Train Controllers and colleagues to monitor performance, manage systems, investigate delays and support decision-making that keeps freight moving.

The role requires strong analytical and communication skills, ability to work under pressure and a good grasp of rail operations.

Qualifications

• Experience of railway operations and understanding of rail industry structure.
• Good railway geographical knowledge.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and respond calmly during incidents and disruption.
• Knowledge of TOPS and TRUST systems.
• Strong problem-solving and data analysis capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Support control and monitoring of live train services for safe operations.
• Manage rail industry systems including TOPS, TOPS2000 and TRUST.
• Investigate delays and performance-related incidents.
• Support Train Delay Attribution processes and contractual obligations.
• Monitor schedules and resolve data discrepancies.
• Assist with traincrew resource management and rostering.
• Produce reports and analyse performance data.
• Collaborate with internal teams, Network Rail and partners to improve service delivery.
• Maintain accurate operational records and archive documentation.
• Deputise for the Train Controller when required.
