Southampton City Council seeks an experienced Assistant Team Manager for the Family Time and Sessional Service. This dual role involves leading a team of sessional workers, managing Family Time services, and providing support to families in complex situations. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, flexibility for out-of-hours work, and a deep understanding of children's needs. Benefits include a generous pension scheme, flexible working, and 25 days annual leave.
About The Role
The role of the Assistant Team Manager is a dual role responsible for leading the operational function of a bank of zero-hours sessional workers, a team of Contact Supervisors, and a Family Time and Sessional Coordinator.
About The Team
You will oversee a team of bank staff undertaking various roles, from school transport and early intervention support to working with families involved in safeguarding and experiencing high-risk, complex social, emotional, and mental health issues. The team provides practical and emotional support to children, young people, and families to achieve positive outcomes within complex challenges.
You will manage the Family Time service, overseeing the delivery of Family Time for children and families involved in court proceedings or in care. Responsibilities include monitoring the quality of practice, daily interventions, managing different risk levels, and ensuring the coordination of Family Time is efficient and well-organized by the Family Time Coordinator.
You will support staff to adapt to the new service model, working closely with families, professionals, and foster carers to enhance Family Time quality. Providing direct support to Family Time workers, scrutinizing risk assessments, and ensuring appropriate interventions are in place are also key responsibilities.
Management oversight and decision-making support for Family Time workers are essential, along with providing regular supervision to staff and overseeing team meetings to communicate changes and developments.
About You
The role requires a strong understanding of children’s needs, especially children and young people in distress, and foster carers/parents needing practical support outside of office hours. Building positive partnerships across services, foster carers, families, and residential providers is vital.
Flexibility for out-of-hours working and on-call support is necessary, with experience managing high-risk situations in community-based residential settings. The role involves working flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and some overnight shifts, on a rota basis, as part of a leadership team.
