Job description

Clark Wood are working with a leading independent firm of accountants who are looking for an Assistant Tax Manager to join their growing team in York.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and motivated individual with a strong mixed tax background and demonstrable leadership skills. You will play a key role in both managing compliance work and supporting advisory services, while helping to mentor and develop a well-established team.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years' experience within tax, ideally gained within a practice environment, and will be CTA qualified. Previous experience in a supervisory or management role is highly desirable.

The Role

• Managing a portfolio of personal and corporate tax clients
• Delivering high-quality tax compliance services across the portfolio
• Supporting the tax advisory function with complex client queries and planning work
• Reviewing technical work and tax computations prepared by junior staff
• Identifying advisory opportunities and cross-selling other service lines
• Ensuring timely and accurate submissions in line with statutory and client deadlines
• Helping to develop and implement efficient workflows within the tax department
• Using technology effectively to improve processes and client service
• Supporting the development and training of junior team members

About You

• CTA qualified with at least 5 years' tax experience
• Experience in a mixed tax role, with strong knowledge of both corporate and personal tax
• Proven leadership or supervisory experience within practice
• Highly organised with excellent time management skills
• Commercially aware with the ability to communicate complex tax issues clearly
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills – both written and verbal
• Confident in managing workflows and working under pressure to meet deadlines
