Job summary

Thorn Baker Construction is seeking an Assistant Site Manager for a new build preparatory school project on a greenfield site in a conservation area in Worcestershire. You will work with an experienced Senior Site Manager on a 45-week contract to deliver the scheme, including MUGA, tennis court and landscaping works.

The role focuses on day-to-day site management, safety, quality control, subcontractor coordination and effective communication with design teams and clients.

Qualifications

• SMSTS certificate or equivalent.
• CSCS card (construction site).
• Full driving licence required.

Responsibilities

• Assist in day-to-day management to ensure work is safe, on time and within budget.
• Support the Senior Site Manager with coordinating subcontractors, suppliers and operatives.
• Monitor site progress and quality; report issues or delays promptly.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, site rules and environmental policies.
• Maintain clear records of site activities, including daily reports, diaries and deliveries.
• Assist in risk assessments and method statements preparation and implementation.
• Facilitate communication between design team, client representatives and site personnel.
• Support site logistics including plant, materials and equipment.
• Ensure housekeeping and waste management throughout the project.

The development includes construction of the school building, multi-use games area (MUGA), tennis court, swale, and extensive landscaping works. You will work alongside an experienced Senior Site Manager who will provide support throughout the 45 week contract.

Job Duties

• Assist in the day-to-day management of the construction site to ensure work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.
• Support the Senior Site Manager in coordinating subcontractors, suppliers, and site operatives.
• Monitor site progress and quality, reporting any issues or delays promptly.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, site rules, and environmental policies.
• Maintain clear and accurate records of site activities, including daily reports, site diaries, and material deliveries.
• Assist in risk assessments and method statements preparation and implementation.
• Facilitate communication between the design team, client representatives, and site personnel.
• Support the management of site logistics including plant, materials, and equipment.
• Ensure effective site housekeeping and waste management throughout the project duration.

Required Qualifications

• Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate.
• Valid Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.
• Full, valid driving licence.

Experience

• Proven experience working on new build education projects, preferably schools or similar facilities.
• Experience in managing new build construction on greenfield sites, especially within conservation areas, is advantageous.
• Familiarity with coordinating multi-disciplinary teams and subcontractors on site.

Knowledge and Skills

• Strong understanding of construction methods and health and safety legislation.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
• Competent in site administration and record keeping.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with stakeholders.
• Organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and manage time efficiently.

Working Conditions

The role is site-based within Worcestershire and requires working full-time hours throughout the contract duration. The position involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions and may require occasional early starts or extended hours to meet project deadlines. Personal protective equipment will be provided and must be worn at all times on site.
