This role can lead to a full assistant ranger or ranger position, with potential progression to a Level 4 Countryside Ranger apprenticeship after gaining additional experience.

You will work outdoors in all weather conditions as part of our ranger teams, supporting our goal to restore a healthy and natural environment. Your responsibilities include protecting and enhancing the health and wildlife of our countryside, preserving its benefits, and engaging visitors in conservation efforts.
Training includes mandatory week-long college blocks and online learning, with all expenses paid. Opportunities for travel to other Trust locations with overnight stays may also be available to broaden your experience.
The South Downs West Ranger team manages nearly 3,000 hectares of diverse habitats, including Lowland Heath, Chalk Grassland, ancient woodland, coppice, orchards, and natural regeneration areas. Recently, the team has taken on over 200 hectares of former arable land and maintains a herd of native cattle and sheep.
Working alongside your mentor, you'll develop skills and knowledge relevant to the Countryside Worker Level 2 apprenticeship standard. You will participate in regular review meetings, complete mandatory e-learning, courses, and training to support your progression.

If aged 18 or under and without Grade C/4 in English and Maths, you will be enrolled in Functional Skills Level 2 as part of your apprenticeship. Support will be provided to complete this if you are 19 or over. Applicants with relevant qualifications or experience may have funding eligibility assessed.
