Join a leading organization as an Assistant Ranger apprentice, where you'll help conserve the countryside and tackle climate change. This role offers hands-on experience, training, and the opportunity to progress in your career while working outdoors in diverse habitats.
Come and join us on a National Trust apprenticeship where we’ll support and develop you to play an integral part in our work to tackle climate change, protect historic sites, and help people and nature thrive. You don’t need experience for this role, just loads of enthusiasm and a desire to learn.
As an Assistant Ranger apprentice, you’ll be working as a member of the rangering team to conserve the environment that makes the countryside both distinctive and special, helping to take care of our protected landscapes.
This role can lead to an assistant ranger or ranger role and potentially progress to a Level 4 Countryside Ranger apprenticeship after gaining additional experience.
You’ll be working outdoors in all weather as part of our ranger teams, supporting our strategy to restore a healthy, beautiful, and natural environment. Your role involves protecting and enhancing the health and wildlife richness of our countryside, preserving its benefits, and helping visitors experience and connect with our outdoor places.
Your training will be delivered through a combination of mandatory week-long college blocks and online learning, with all expenses and travel paid. There may also be opportunities to travel to other National Trust locations with overnight stays to broaden your learning and experience.
On the Roseland Peninsula, you will work across diverse habitats—from coastal grasslands and wildflower meadows to wooded valleys, waterways, and beaches. The team has recently taken back management of a farm, offering an exciting opportunity to reintroduce nature onto the land significantly.
The work is varied, including maintaining coast paths, habitat creation, and surveying. You will develop practical skills such as fencing, tree work, and animal management, alongside a solid understanding of land management and ecology.
Working alongside your mentor, you’ll develop skills and knowledge relevant to this apprenticeship standard. You’ll attend regular review meetings with your training provider and be responsible for your own progression. Completing mandatory e-learning, courses, and training is part of your role.
In addition to the qualities listed in the role profile, we’d love to hear from you if you meet the following eligibility criteria by the start date:
If you are aged 18 or under at the point of enrolment and have not achieved English and Maths at grade C/4, you’ll be enrolled on functional skills level 2 as part of your apprenticeship. This will be optional if you are 19 or over, but we’ll support you to complete it when offered.
If you have a qualification in a related subject or substantial relevant work experience, this may affect eligibility for government funding, which will be verified if your application progresses.
The National Trust’s motto is ‘For everyone, for ever’. We are committed to creating an inclusive culture where everyone feels they belong. We value diversity and aim to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome everyone into our teams.
