Assistant Radiological Protection Engineer / Trainee RPA, Whitehaven

Job Description

Purpose of Role:

  • To assist RP Engineers in the design and planning of work and review of products, technology and processes including the modification of Radiological Protection arrangements to maintain compliance with current legislation.
  • To provide Radiological Protection support in the practical delivery of client works with a particular focus on operational decommissioning work.

Key Duties/Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Provide technical support on Radiological Protection matters to ensure compliance with Ionising Radiation Regulations and any mandatory rules on client sites.
  • Assist in the development of deliverables in support of a radiological protection programme for projects, including documentation such as Radiological Risk Assessments, Radiological Design Documents, Critical Examinations, Dose Estimates, Local Rules, Contingency Plans, and Investigation Reports.
  • Review radiological monitoring data for operational packages of work.
  • Assist in the delivery of ALARP assessments.
  • Support of Best Available Technique assessments and other optioning processes.
  • Assist with radioactive waste aspects of projects as required, with support from other specialists if necessary.
  • Support delivery within their range of skills, knowledge, experience, and competence, working with projects and clients to solve complex problems while maintaining excellent relationships.
  • Support colleagues’ learning and development through knowledge sharing.
  • Assist in deploying local and company policies, processes, and systems under senior guidance.
  • Take accountability for the quality of their work, following directions from senior colleagues.

Training:

The post holder will complete training as defined in AtkinsRéalis’ Common EMEA Training Profiles, supplemented by Nuclear and Power Specific Training Profiles. They are encouraged to work towards gaining an RPA certification.

Person Specification:

Applicants must meet all essential criteria in the person specification, with extensive experience considered if qualification criteria are not fully met, subject to technical competence assessment.

Requirements:

  • Educated to NQF Level 5 (HND or equivalent) in a scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Relevant experience in Radiological Protection.
  • Proactive in recommending, agreeing, acting, and reporting.
  • Member of a relevant professional institute.
  • Willing to work towards RPA certification.
  • Basic understanding of Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017.
  • Commercial awareness and ability to work within budgets and schedules.
  • Flexible and willing to travel to client sites.
