Job summary

Breedon Group plc is seeking an Assistant Quarry Manager for our Beauly, Balblair site. Reporting to the Quarry Manager, you will support daily operations, oversee production activities, ensure safety and regulatory compliance, and contribute to improvements in efficiency and product quality.

The role requires leadership of colleagues and contractors, adherence to health and environmental standards, and proactive involvement in planning and risk assessments.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of quarrying processes and plant operations.
• Experience in health, safety and environmental regulations and best practices.
• Excellent leadership and people management abilities.
• Ability to use quarry management systems and MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and scheduling production including blasting, crushing, screening and stockpiling.
• Support Quarry Manager to meet production targets safely, efficiently, and within budget.
• Participate in quality control to ensure materials meet standards.
• Monitor and maintain equipment with preventative maintenance schedules.
• Keep accurate records of materials, stock, maintenance and safety incidents.
• Assist with budgets, costs, and procurement of consumables and spare parts.
• Contribute to long-term planning including quarry development and rehabilitation.
• Supervise and coordinate quarry staff and contractors, promoting teamwork.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations.
• Assist with safety programs and regular inspections with risk assessments.
• Deputise for the Quarry Manager when required.

Position Overview: We are seeking a motivated and safety‑conscious Assistant Quarry Manager to support the efficient and safe day‑to‑day operations of our quarry site. Reporting to the Quarry Manager, you will help oversee production activities, ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, support the management of colleagues and contractors, and contribute to continuous improvement in operational efficiency and product quality. You will be the "Responsible Person" on site in the absence of the Quarry Manager.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in the planning and scheduling of production, including blasting, crushing, screening and stockpiling to ensure it is carried out to the highest standard
• Assist the Quarry Manager in overseeing quarry operations to ensure production targets are met safely, efficiently, and within budget
• Participate in quality control procedures to ensure materials meet required standards and specifications
• Monitor and maintain equipment and machinery through preventative maintenance schedules to reduce downtime and improve productivity
• Keep accurate records of materials produced, stock levels, maintenance, and safety incidents
• Help manage budgets, control costs, and assist with ordering and inventory of consumables and spare parts
• Provide input for long‑term planning, including quarry development and rehabilitation
• Supervise and coordinate quarry colleagues and contractors, including assigning duties, monitoring performance, and promoting teamwork
• Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations
• Support the implementation of safety programs and conduct regular inspections and risk assessments, reporting defects
• Deputise for the Quarry Manager when required.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

• Strong understanding of quarrying processes and plant operations
• Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations and best practices
• Strong leadership and people management skills
• Competence in using quarry management systems and Microsoft Office Suite
• Excellent problem‑solving and decision‑making ability
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong organisational and time‑management abilities
• High attention to detail
• Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities
• Valid UK driver’s license.

Desirable

• Degree or diploma in Quarry Management, Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related field
• NVQ Level 4/5 in Health, Safety & Environmental Management
