Full time Assistant/ Trainee Quantity Surveyor in Exeter

Your new company

We have a great opportunity for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our team at our Exeter office. This role is ideal for an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor or Trainee seeking to advance their career, working on a large multi-phase scheme in Exeter. You will assist in delivering our expanding development projects in the area, reporting to the Commercial Manager and working closely with a Senior Quantity Surveyor to support the commercial delivery of residential schemes. Your responsibilities will include cost management from procurement to final accounts, and the role requires experience in a similar position within the region, preferably with a main contractor or developer.

Your new role

  1. Attend site pre-start meetings to understand construction drawings with the Senior/Quantity Surveyor.
  2. Assist in preparing tender packages for sub-contract trades.
  3. Receive and analyze tenders, comparing levels for each trade.
  4. Assist in issuing sub-contract orders in line with Group Policy and Best Practice, ensuring budget and program compliance, and attend pre-order meetings.
  5. Liaise with the Build Department regarding subcontractor performance and compliance.
  6. Help produce sub-contract orders aligned with site build requirements and fully adjudicate before issuance.
  7. Provide forecast and site budget information to meet reporting needs.
  8. Assist in controlling and reporting post-contract cost movements, providing monthly updates.
  9. Ensure timely processing of invoices and applications for payments.
  10. Notify management of any claims or legal actions related to disputes or payments from subcontractors or service providers.
  11. Assist in determining subcontract orders according to employment terms and liaise with Build Department accordingly.
  12. Use BMS and processes diligently for site project administration including orders, variations, and valuations.
  13. Review on-site materials and valuations regularly.
  14. Settle variation invoices and applications for payment.
  15. Assist in certifying retention releases upon project completion.
  16. Help prepare and agree final accounts for subcontractors.
  17. Maintain systems for efficient filing and retrieval of project information.
  18. Support the maintenance of final account schedules.
  19. Engage in ongoing self-development and training.
  20. Participate in departmental meetings and handle colleague queries.

What you'll need to succeed

  • HNC / Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or equivalent.
  • Understanding of building regulations and legal obligations.
  • Knowledge of construction methods and materials.
  • Strong mathematical and IT skills, particularly in Microsoft Excel.
  • Understanding of measurement rules and budget management.
  • Negotiation and networking skills.
  • Teamwork and attention to detail.
  • Methodical approach to work.
