Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-orientedAssistant Quantity Surveyorto join our growing commercial team. The ideal candidate will support their QS in managing and controlling budgets, estimating work, lifecycle cost management, and final accounting.

The role involves working across both HJ Collection and its sister company, HJ Collection Solutions a groundworks contractor currently expanding beyond its core focus in telecoms. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating new schedules of rates and applying existing ones to produce accurate cost estimates for upcoming projects, primarily within the groundworks sector and other related areas of construction

Office based at our Braintree Head Office with occasional travel to site

Salary: Dependent on Experience

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates and tender documents.
  • Support procurement processes and subcontractor appointment.
  • Monitor project costs and prepare regular financial reports.
  • Assist in valuing completed work and arranging payments.
  • Conduct site visits to assess progress and verify variations.
  • Liaise with internal teams, contractors, and suppliers.
  • Help maintain compliance with company policies, procedures, and contracts.
  • Provide support in identifying cost-saving opportunities and value engineering.
  • Assist with supplier communication.

Essential

  • 1–2 years experience in a quantity surveying or construction cost management role.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Familiarity with construction contracts (JCT, NEC 3/4)
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and measurement software (e.g., Bluebeam, CostX).

Desirable

  • Previous experience in residential or mixed-use developments.
  • Groundworks estimating experience.
  • Quantity Surveying Degree / HND.
  • Experience taking projects from tendering through to final accounts.
