We are looking to recruit an Assistant Public Health Officer to join North Northamptonshire’s forward-thinking and friendly Public Health team. The purpose of the role is to support and co-ordinate the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Public Health programmes, projects and initiatives across North Northamptonshire. The postholder will provide project, administrative and stakeholder support to Public Health Practitioners, Officers and Commissioners to ensure services are delivered effectively, in accordance with public health guidance and best practice.
Alongside this role, the successful applicant must be willing and eligible to complete a Level 6 Public Health Practitioner Apprenticeship with Coventry University
This is a three-year BSc programme delivered through blended learning, combining academic study with workplace-based learning so that apprentices can apply their knowledge, skills and behaviours directly within public health practice. The programme is aligned to the Skills England Public Health Practitioner apprenticeship standard and the UK Public Health Register Practitioner Standards.
The successful candidate will be required to work remotely, attend our offices in Kettering, and travel to Coventry University for apprenticeship training days. This is a full-time fixed-term opportunity on a 3-year basis.

As an Assistant Public Health Officer, you will be responsible for:
Applicants should hold A-Level or Level 3 equivalent qualifications (or equivalent work-based experience) and have experience with office-based administrative tasks such as co-ordinating and supporting meetings and engagement events, both online and in-person. Critically, applicants must be willing and eligible to undergo further study in the form of a Level 6-degree apprenticeship with the University of Coventry and be able to begin training with Coventry in time from January 2027. As an apprenticeship opportunity, eligibility will be assessed in line with apprenticeship funding rules, including consideration of any existing degree-level qualifications and their relevance to the apprenticeship.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in public health and some understanding of key public health concepts, partnership working and the role of local authorities, the NHS and voluntary and community sector organisations in improving health and wellbeing. Knowledge of project planning and implementation would be beneficial. You will be confident using Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams, to support accurate recording, monitoring and reporting. Strong written and verbal communication skills, good presentation skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders will be important. You will also be well organised, able to manage your workload, prioritise tasks and use your own initiative to meet objectives.
The successful applicant will be able to analyse, interpret and present information clearly to support effective decision-making and help improve the accessibility, quality and impact of public health services. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking and a flexible approach will be important in responding to changing priorities and supporting the wider needs of the team.
