Job summary

Hywel Dda University Health Board is seeking a Band 5 Assistant Psychologist to work in the Psychology Adult Mental Health Service on Morlais Ward, Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen. The post is 0.6 wte (22.5 hours per week) on a permanent basis in an adult acute inpatient setting.

The successful candidate will be supervised by a Principal Clinical Psychologist and work with other Assistant Psychologists across the three counties.

Qualifications

  • Recognised upper second-class honours degree in Psychology.
  • Graduate Basis for Registration with the British Psychological Society (BPS).
  • Experience of working with clinical populations would be beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver standardised low-level psychological interventions to inpatients on acute wards.
  • Assist in administration of questionnaires and data collection (psychometrics).
  • Undertake protocol-based psychological assessment using tests and interviews.
  • Assist in formulation and delivery of care and treatment plans under supervision.
  • Develop clinical reports and correspondence reviewed by the supervisor.
  • Opportunities to develop service evaluation and service development.
  • Welsh language ability is desirable; English and Welsh speakers welcome.

Job Overview

The Psychology Adult Mental Health Service is very pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Assistant Psychologist position to work in an adult acute inpatient setting, on a permanent basis. The post is based on Morlais Ward, in Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen and is 0.6 wte (22.5 hours per week).

The successful applicant would be working as part of a welcoming Adult Mental Health Psychology department, which provides professional support and encourages future career development. The post-holder will be supervised by a Principal Clinical Psychologist and work alongside other Assistant Psychologists based across the three counties. The post-holder will need to be able to demonstrate innovation, commitment and enthusiasm for improving psychological needs of people with mental health conditions. They must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team to support the existing service. The position is embedded within a multidisciplinary team, comprising of various healthcare professionals and the role includes opportunities to joint work alongside these professionals.

Applicants must have a recognised upper second‑class honours degree in Psychology and have the Graduate Basis for Registration with the British Psychological Society (BPS). Experience of working with clinical populations would be beneficial.

Main duties of the job
  • Under the supervision of the Principal Clinical Psychologist (Acute Psychology Service Lead) the post-holder will deliver standardised low-level psychological interventions to inpatients on the acute psychiatric wards in both individual and group formats.
  • To assist in the administration of questionnaires and the collation of data (psychometrics).
  • To undertake protocol-based psychological assessment of clients using psychological tests, including neuropsychological assessments, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care.
  • To assist in the formulation and delivery of care and treatment plans involving the psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s problem, under the supervision of a qualified professional psychologist within settings appropriate to the service.
  • The role requires development of clinical reports and correspondence to referrers, all which are reviewed by the supervisor.
  • There are opportunities for the post-holder to develop other psychological competencies within this role such as service evaluation and service development.
  • The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
