Job summary

Princebuild is seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Project Manager to support delivery of refurbishment and construction projects in Peterborough, with occasional travel. This full-time role offers a structured development path in a family business built on Building, Sharing and Caring.

You will work with Project Managers, site teams, and clients to develop coordination and planning skills, with mentoring and formal training to progress toward a Project Manager position.

Qualifications

  • Essential: Construction-related qualification or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Managers with delivery of refurbishment and construction projects from pre-construction to handover.
  • Support management of projects to meet programme, budget and quality targets.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, CDM Regulations and company policies.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring project programmes and risk escalation.
  • Attend and contribute to project, site and client meetings; prepare reports and minutes.
  • Develop positive relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and site teams.
  • Interpret contract documents, specifications and drawings to support delivery.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers and site teams to meet programme, quality and safety standards.
  • Monitor project progress and help resolve day-to-day site issues.
  • Assist with cost control, variations, valuations, procurement and reporting.
  • Support procurement of materials and plant aligned with programmes.
  • Assist with quality inspections and defect resolution.
  • Support tendering and pre-construction activities with estimating and commercial teams.
  • Promote a collaborative working environment reflecting Building, Sharing and Caring values.
  • Undertake other duties commensurate with the role and support development towards a Project Manager.

What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • Construction-related qualification (BSc, HNC/HND or equivalent experience considered)
  • Proven experience as an Assistant Project Manager or a similar role within the construction industry
  • Strong understanding of construction processes and commercial awareness
  • Ability to interpret drawings and technical information
  • Experience in coordinating and organising multiple trade disciplines and site teams.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to co-ordination multiple activities and prioritise tasks
  • A proactive, positive, and solutions-focused approach aligned with our values of Building, Sharing, and Caring
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Confidence using IT systems (Microsoft Office and project tools)
  • Full UK driving licence (minimum 6 months post-test experience)

  • SMSTS or SSSTS
  • First Aid at Work certification
  • Temporary Works Coordinator (TWCTC)

What You'll Be Doing

Reporting to a Senior Project Manager, the Assistant Project Manager will support the successful delivery of projects by working closely with Project Managers, site teams, and stakeholders. You will help ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard, meeting programme, cost, and quality expectations.

Working alongside Project Managers, you’ll be involved in delivering high-profile retail, commercial and refurbishment projects, giving you exposure to every stage of the project lifecycle.

This role is designed for someone looking to progress into a Project Management position. You’ll receive mentoring from experienced Senior Project Managers, together with ongoing professional development.

Our team delivers a variety of refurbishment and construction projects for some of the UK’s leading retail and commercial clients. Every project is different, providing the opportunity to develop technical, commercial and leadership skills while working alongside experienced professionals in a supportive environment.

This is a key supporting role within the team, contributing to strong communication, collaboration, and a culture built on Building, Sharing, and Caring throughout project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Managers with the successful delivery of allocated refurbishment and construction projects from pre-construction through to completion and handover.
  • Support the management of projects to ensure they are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the required quality standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, CDM Regulations, company policies and procedures and all statutory requirements.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring project programmes, identifying potential risks and escalating issues where appropriate.
  • Attend and contribute to project, site and client meetings, preparing reports, progress updates and meeting minutes as required.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and site teams.
  • Interpret contract documentation, specifications, design information and construction drawings, to support the successful delivery of projects.
  • Support the co-ordination and monitoring of subcontractors, suppliers and site teams to ensure programme, quality and safety standards are achieved.
  • Monitor project progress and support the resolution of day-to-day site and project issues.
  • Assist with project cost control, including variations, valuations, procurement and commercial reporting.
  • Support the procurement of materials and plant, ensuring resources are available and in line with project programmes.
  • Assist with quality inspections and ensure defects are identified and resolved promptly.
  • Support tendering and pre-construction activities alongside the estimating and commercial teams where required.
  • Promote a collaborative working environment that reflects the Company’s values of Building, Sharing and Caring.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role and support continued professional development towards becoming a Project Manager.

Working Hours

This is a Full-time position of 42 hours per week:

  • Monday to Thursday: 07:45 – 17:15hrs
  • Friday: 07:45 – 16:45rs

Flexibility and travel (including occasional overnight stays) may be required depending on project needs.
