Description

The Assistant Programme Manager will support the Senior Programme Manager in delivering estates, infrastructure, and operational transformation projects within a public sector environment. This role involves managing small work packages and programmes with guidance from the Senior Programme Manager, ensuring effective programme coordination, governance compliance, and stakeholder engagement. The role also supports wider programme activities by assisting project delivery teams in resolving challenges and driving continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Programme & Work Package Management: Manage small work packages and programmes, ensuring effective planning, coordination, and delivery with support from the Senior Programme Manager.
  2. Governance & Assurance: Ensure compliance with programme-level governance requirements, maintaining documentation, tracking compliance, and adhering to reporting standards.
  3. Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a key point of contact for project teams, providing support in issue resolution, risk management, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  4. Reporting & Performance Management: Assist in programme-level reporting, ensuring alignment with PMO standards, templates, and performance monitoring processes.
  5. Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance governance processes, improve programme efficiency, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  6. Meeting Coordination: Chair programme-level meetings, stakeholder briefings, and work package review sessions as required.
  7. Support Programme Oversight: Provide additional support to the Senior Programme Manager in overseeing larger programmes and managing interdependencies between projects.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • Experience in managing small work packages or coordinating programmes within a public sector, estates, or infrastructure setting.
  • Strong understanding of programme management principles, governance, and reporting processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams and prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and supporting project teams.
  • Proficiency in project tracking tools such as Smartsheet, Power BI, or similar.

Desirable

  • Experience with contract administration and compliance processes.
  • Knowledge of capital investment, public sector estates, or government-led infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with construction programmes and the RIBA Plan of Work.
  • Formal qualifications in Project or Programme Management (APM, Prince2, or equivalent).
