About the Role West Sussex County Council is seeking a motivated and adaptable Assistant Passenger Transport Planner to join their transport planning team based in Chichester. This hybrid role (minimum 2 days in office per week, including Tuesdays) offers a dynamic and rewarding opportunity to help shape and deliver effective transport services across the county.
Passenger transport planning is a fast-paced and varied area. You’ll be helping design and coordinate transport solutions that support a wide range of community needs — from children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to mainstream school pupils in remote areas, and adults requiring transport assistance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage transport arrangements for public, school, or adult social care services
  • Respond to time-sensitive technical queries from residents, service users, and transport providers
  • Collaborate with the Senior Planner and wider team to deliver high-quality, customer-focused solutions
  • Utilise specialist planning software (training provided) to coordinate efficient transport routes
  • Support continuous improvement of service delivery and maintain accurate records
  • Conduct visits to depots and occasionally travel across West Sussex (PPE provided where required)
  • Assist with occasional out-of-hours needs (evenings/weekends)
Working Arrangement
  • Hybrid working: 2 days per week in the Chichester office (Tuesdays mandatory)
  • Remaining days can be worked remotely during standard office hours
  • Must be able to travel across the county for depot visits and operational needs
Requirements
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills, with a regular requirement to interact in English with the public
  • Willingness to travel across the county and work flexible hours if needed
  • Ability to learn and apply technical planning tools and processes quickly
  • Commitment to customer service and attention to detail
Prior experience in transport planning or logistics is advantageous but not essential — training will be provided.
