Job summary

A leading construction firm is seeking an Assistant Materials Engineer to support the delivery of materials engineering services for the Skye Reinforcement Project. The role involves providing technical support, materials testing, and sustainability activities. Ideal candidates will possess a relevant degree or 3 years of experience in materials engineering, a full UK driving license, and knowledge of materials including earthworks and concrete. This site-based role is located on the Isle of Skye and offers various employee benefits.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge or experience in ISO 17025 accredited laboratory systems is desirable.
  • Experience with laboratory materials testing, geology, and/or civil engineering is beneficial.

About the role

Balfour Beatty are looking for an Assistant Materials Engineer to join thier Power T&D business and focus on their major Skye Reinforcement Project.

Role Purpose

To support the management and delivery of materials engineering services within Balfour beatty Skye Project.

The role requires individuals with up to date technical knowledge of materials engineering including, earthworks/aggregates, Concrete, Asphalt and Cementitious Grouts.

This is a site based role on Isle of Skye.

What you'll be doing
Accountabilities
  • Support the delivery of Sustainability activities
  • To assist technical support to tenders and live projects, including specialist materials engineering input and support the work winning team and operations teams in materials value engineering (VE) and in identifying appropriate, robust VE solutions
  • Support the projects and delivery teams, providing expert technical support in materials engineering design, assurance and management
  • Provide materials testing services to both tenders and project delivery (construction contracts), managing some aspects, and setting standards in line with the BB Group / JV and relevant sustainability goals
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant materials engineering consultants and suppliers, managing their input in the design, development, pricing and delivery of technical solutions on site and in tenders
  • Provide technical support and attend work winning interviews with current or potential customers
  • Support and promote management initiatives
  • Support the materials team in materials risk management, identifying and recording best practice and areas for improvement on contracts
  • Maintain personal expertise and knowledge to ensure that BB is at the forefront of the industry both technically and in using the latest technologies and standards
  • Assist where requested, audits of construction and materials including testing and ensure all meet project specifications and relevant standards
  • Resolve material technical issues in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ensure procedures and quality systems are applied
  • Be aware of designers obligations of CDM
  • Mentor members of the team to deliver high performance and a culture of continuous improvement
  • Assist in challenging the specifications/proposals and re-engineering to develop alternative value engineered proposals
  • Provide procurement strategies for both the re-use, purchase and disposal of materials

Who we're looking for
Essential

Must be degree qualified or have a minimum of 3 years relevant experience in the construction materials engineering industry.

Must hold full UK driving licence and be eligible for a CSCS card.

Up to date technical knowledge of materials engineering including, earthworks/aggregates, Concrete, Asphalt and Cementitious Grouts.

Knowledge or experience of working within an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory system is desirable.

Experience of data management, reporting and basic statistics using Excel or other packages is beneficial.

Desirable

Experience / knowledge with laboratory materials testing, geology and / or civil engineering.

A candidate who is passionate and shows an excitement for their work.

Someone who is willing to go the extra mile to exceed expectations and who has a key focus on meeting the requirements of their customer would be ideal.

A quick learner, adaptable to change and someone who is organised would also suit the role well.
