Assistant Manager - Power and Utilities Finance WACC

Base Location: London CSQ. Our other offices nationally are listed below.

Our Infrastructure Group in the UK consists of around 400 professionals and is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading independent advisers in infrastructure. We provide in-depth advice on strategic, financial, regulatory and commercial issues driving investments in infrastructure across Transport, Power & Utilities, and Social Infrastructure in the UK and globally. Our work includes market and policy design, economic and regulatory analysis, deal structuring and execution, and strategic and transaction advice to enable private and public capital to fund infrastructure. We work closely with other functions within KPMG to advise clients on mergers and acquisitions, valuations, tax, accounting, and due diligence.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Developing a good understanding of regulatory finance issues in the regulated sectors e.g. on setting the cost of capital or assessing financeability, as well as how regulatory mechanisms interact with or impact the actual financing of regulated businesses
  • Developing market intelligence and sector knowledge
  • Own the implementation of WACC and CAPM analysis, including the development, calibration, and maintenance of financial models to assess the cost of equity, cost of debt, and overall WACC within the framework of regulatory guidelines
  • Contributing to the delivery of specific engagements on a day to day basis
  • Supporting pitching for new business with ideas
  • Contributing to specific business development initiatives, particularly proposals and pitches; Contributing to delivery of multiple projects simultaneously
  • Specifying, producing and evaluating financial models
  • Contributing to the effective planning, delivery and closure of projects; maintaining a good understanding of the regulatory frameworks and financial implications in the water and energy sectors; as well as any other duties commensurate with the role
What you will need to do it
  • Strong working knowledge of economic and financial theory and its real-world application
  • Skilled in quantitative economic and financial analysis, with hands-on experience in financial econometrics and statistics
  • Practical experience applying WACC and CAPM analysis, ideally in regulatory or infrastructure contexts such as water, energy, or transport
  • Solid understanding of corporate finance, for example risk-return trade-offs, capital structure, asset pricing, and beta estimation
  • Familiarity with credit spreads, yield curve analysis, and the characteristics of index-linked versus nominal debt structures
  • Awareness of how credit ratings, interest rate movements, and broader debt market conditions influence the WACC
  • Strong analytical skills, coupled with intellectual curiosity and a proactive approach to solving complex problems
  • Ability to think independently, identify challenges, and develop innovative, well-evidenced solutions
  • Capable of providing compelling and well-reasoned answers to complex economic and financial questions, articulating ideas clearly and confidently
  • Skilled at translating complex financial analysis into clear, concise messages for non-technical audiences, including regulators and clients
  • Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to work across a diverse range of projects and sectors, often under time pressure and with varying client needs
  • Proficiency in quantitative tools such as Stata or R
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills, including building and presenting financial models and analysis
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and well-structured reports
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg, LSEG Workspace, Capital IQ

Ideally experience in the utilities sector, water and energy networks sectors in particular, preferably in the industry (either with a company or the regulator)

At least 3 A levels or equivalent; Undergraduate or higher Graduate Degree in Economics, Finance, Mathematics or similar (candidates with other degrees will be considered depending on their experience).
