Job summary

Venture Recruitment Partners in Winchester is seeking an Assistant Finance Manager to join a growing SME on a 12-month fixed-term contract. The role involves supporting day-to-day finance, mentoring junior staff, and delivering accurate financial reporting to assist business decisions.

You will drive month-end close, prepare management accounts, handle VAT and payroll tasks, support year-end audits, and contribute to budgeting and cash flow planning.

Qualifications

• Part-qualified (ACCA/CIMA/ACA) or Qualified by Experience (QBE).
• Proven experience within a finance function, ideally in an SME.
• Experience mentoring, supervising, or supporting junior finance team members.
• Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Confident communicator with stakeholders at all levels.
• Highly organized with ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting systems.
• Proactive, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Support the month-end close process and ensure deadlines are met.
• Prepare monthly management accounts with detailed reconciliations and schedules.
• Review bank reconciliations and maintain the nominal ledger for accuracy.
• Complete VAT returns, fixed asset accounting, and general ledger reviews.
• Assist with payroll administration, including HMRC reporting and pension submissions.
• Support year-end statutory accounts and liaise with auditors.
• Provide operational finance support including loan postings, payments and refunds.
• Contribute to KPI reporting, covenant monitoring, and management information.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning with budget holders.

Assistant Finance Manager - 12 month FTC

Venture Recruitment Partners are delighted to be working with a growing business in Winchester to recruit an Assistant Finance Manager. This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive and hands-on finance professional looking to take the next step in their career within a dynamic SME environment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day finance function, supporting the junior finance team and delivering accurate financial reporting, and assisting with the development of junior team members. Previous experience working within an SME and mentoring or supervising colleagues is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the preparation and management of the month-end close process, ensuring reporting deadlines are consistently achieved.
• Prepare monthly management accounts, including detailed reconciliations and supporting schedules.
• Review bank reconciliations and maintain the nominal ledger to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
• Complete VAT returns, fixed asset accounting, and general ledger reviews, ensuring compliance and accuracy across finance processes.
• Assist with payroll administration, including HMRC reporting and pension submissions.
• Support the preparation of year-end statutory accounts and liaise with external auditors throughout the audit process.
• Provide operational finance support where required, including loan postings, payments, and refunds.
• Contribute to KPI reporting, covenant monitoring, and management information to support business decision-making.

About You
