Assistant Management Accountant

Reporting To

Day to day reporting line is to the Finance Manager. Overall reporting is to the Financial Controller.

Job Purpose

Brodies is a modern, dynamic and innovative commercial law firm with over 800 employees. An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a key part of this highly successful business within the Financial Reporting team. At Brodies we place a strong emphasis on producing financial information quickly and accurately. Our goal within the Financial Reporting Team is to get this information to each Practice Area in a timely manner, enabling them to make informed decisions. The successful candidate will work closely with the Finance Manager and other members of the Financial Reporting team to assist them in their preparation of financial and management accounting information for the business including the Operational and Strategic Boards. The Financial Reporting team work to tight deadlines and need to deliver under pressure. The successful candidate will be expected to use analytical thinking, problem solving skills and a can-do approach to ensure the team delivers on its business objectives. The successful candidate will be based in our Glasgow office but on occasions it may be necessary to travel to our other offices in particular our Edinburgh Office.

Core Tasks
  • Assisting in the preparation of monthly management accounts for review by the Finance Manager.
  • Assist in the completion of monthly Board packs.
  • Preparation of monthly P&L and Balance Sheet for review by Finance Manager.
  • Preparation of Accruals and Prepayments and review of Fixed Asset Register where required.
  • Input of monthly payroll journals into the Practice Management System.
  • Financial ledger reconciliations and analysis including payroll reconciliations.
  • Working with other members of the Financial Reporting Team to prepare and review VAT returns
  • Assist in the maintenance of system used for pricing and profitability work
  • Assist the Finance Manager with year end and the subsequent year end audit.
  • Assisting Financial Tax Accountant in respect of partnership accounting where required.
  • Assisting Financial Tax Accountant in preparation of the partnership tax return.
  • Preparing and reviewing various monthly reports at month end for internal/external clients.
  • Training and supporting other members of the Financial Reporting team.
  • Working with Finance Manager to develop financial reporting within the firm.
  • Dealing with duties of other Financial Reporting team members in their absence including daily reporting and maintenance of charge out rates on the system. Responding to queries through the Financial Reporting mailbox.
  • Providing support to the Practice Area Leaders including the provision of financial information as and when required.
  • Providing support to partners/directors/lawyers to include the provision of financial information as and when required.
  • Ad hoc reporting.
  • Other financial reporting and relevant tasks as required.
  • Be aware of Brodies\' information security policies, and protect information assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference at all times.
Person Specification
  • Part-qualified accountant - CIMA or ACCA.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience of working within a similar role.
  • Previous experience in a professional services environment is preferable.
  • Ability to work effectively with other team members and the wider finance team.
  • Computer literate - particularly in Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
