Assistant literary editor - 1 year FTC

The Times is seeking an assistant editor to join our literary department on a one-year fixed-term contract.

The successful candidate will write, commission, and edit book reviews across a wide range of subjects, pitch imaginative ideas for literary news stories and features. They should have broad reading habits, be digital savvy, and provide administrative support to the literary team. A flair for writing and an independent mind are essential.

This is an exciting opportunity for a creative and organized journalist with a keen interest in seeing their name in print and online.

Responsibilities
  • Support the literary team in producing the books section in print and online
  • Manage the department’s social media and promote book content to boost digital impact
  • Organize the flow of books in and out of the paper, liaising with publishers and reviewers
  • Write, commission, and edit book reviews and features
  • Help produce and write the weekly books newsletter, with lively and fun ideas
  • Pitch stories for the Culture section and write on literary matters for print and digital
  • Collaborate with other sections across the paper
  • Provide administrative support to the literary team
Skills and Experience
  • Good literary knowledge and broad reading across non-fiction subjects
  • A lively writing style; wit is a plus
  • Experience at a national newspaper is valuable but not essential; a commitment to journalism is required
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain high standards
  • Attention to detail and meticulous fact-checking
  • Effective communication skills across all levels and with external contacts
  • Enthusiastic, flexible, and proactive attitude
