We now have an exciting opportunity for a talented insurance lawyer to join our Property Risks and Coverage Large & Complex Loss team. This role is based out of our Bristol office.
Flexible working is encouraged for the right candidates, with a minimum office attendance set at manager’s discretion.
Our cases require a collaborative approach and you will be part of a team which will typically handle property damage claims arising from fires, floods, product liability and other perils. You will be part of a team and will be supporting more experienced lawyers who will be dealing with complex Household and Commercial property damage matters.
The team acts on behalf of a number of the key insurer clients for the firm.


Key Accountabilities

The team has a particular focus on higher value and complex matters, including claimant and defendant work, claims where policy coverage is in issue and claims for corporate clients. The work that the team does will involve advising a number of well-known insurers on issues of policy coverage, prospects of success and evidential matters arising from complex fires, floods and other perils.

The key accountabilities for these roles will be dependent upon the level at which the successful candidate starts in role but typically the key accountabilities will include assisting Partners/Lead Lawyers and other senior team members in the following:

  • Reviewing documents and preparing chronologies on behalf of the Lead Lawyer
  • Bespoke draft advices on issues pertaining to the matter on behalf of the Lead Lawyer
  • Managing your own case load of lower value/less complex matters
  • Assisting the Lead lawyer with all aspects of the litigation process
  • Considering the issues of coverage, liability, quantum and strategy
  • Conducting investigations
  • Preparing first draft instructions to counsel and experts
  • Legal research
  • Document searches
  • Attending client meetings/strategy discussions/conferences for the purpose of note taking and follow up.
For Cases Managed Independently:
  • Handle all aspects of case management.
  • Draft applications and court proceedings.
  • Engage in settlement negotiations, roundtable discussions, and ADR.

Experience, Skills and Qualifications

Legal Qualification: Solicitor/FILEX
Experience: Previous property insurance litigation experience
Knowledge: Thorough understanding of disputes and claims handled by the department and our insurer clients
Technical Expertise: Familiarity with product liability, breach of contract, negligence, property law, and insurance coverage issues

Required Soft Skills:
  • Excellent communication skills
  • An ability to prioritise workload
  • Ability to pay attention to detail
  • Ability to work with case management systems
  • Strong interpersonal skills e.g. to deal with senior KCs, C-suite clients, opposing lawyers etc
  • Microsoft office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Foxit/Adobe Pdf
