Full-time starting salary normally in the range £32,546 to £35,116, with potential progression to £39,355 after appointment.

Grade: 6

Full-Time Fixed Term contract up to August 2026

Closing date: 11th June 2025

Background

The role involves contributing to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in German studies, across the BA in Modern Languages and the Languages for All programme.

Role Summary

The postholder will teach predominantly in German through seminars and language classes, supporting departmental teaching objectives, with up to 16 hours of lessons per semester/week, including classes for advanced learners and exercises for beginners if required.

Main Duties

  • Deliver teaching activities within classes, tutorials, or groups.
  • Supervise class activities.
  • Contribute to module design with colleagues.
  • Combine language lessons with cultural, historical, or regional content, typically in small class sizes (6-15 students).
  • Supervise around 15 students as a personal tutor.
  • Assist with coursework marking, applying assessment criteria.
  • Support outreach activities, Open Days, and Visit Days.
  • Update subject knowledge and develop teaching skills.
  • Carry out administrative tasks related to teaching.
  • Participate in relevant academic meetings and committees.
  • Advise students and support their learning needs.

Person Specification

  • Degree-level qualification (minimum UK 2:1) in a relevant subject.
  • Fluent in German with up-to-date knowledge of German society, culture, and university system, demonstrated by studies or qualifications in a German-speaking country.
  • Ability to analyze information and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to access and organize resources successfully.
