Job Title: Assistant Head of Year
Location:Northampton
Salary: Grade G, Points 8 - 13 (£25,992 - £28,163 FTE)
Reports to: Head of Year

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Assistant Head of Year to join our pastoral team. This role plays a vital part in supporting the overall achievement, welfare, and development of students by working closely with the Head of Year, teaching staff, and other pastoral professionals. You will help create a positive learning culture, ensuring high standards of behaviour, attendance, and punctuality.

  • Promote a culture of high expectations, ambition, and self-esteem among students.

  • Maintain a visible presence during lessons, assemblies, and unstructured times to encourage punctuality and a calm environment.

  • Manage and support student behaviour, including implementing sanctions and restorative approaches.

  • Provide 1:1 or small group mentoring to support individual student needs.

  • Build positive, collaborative relationships with parents and carers to support student engagement.

  • Keep accurate records and update school systems regularly.

  • Assist in organising and supporting year group events.

  • Participate in meetings, training, and supervisory duties as required.

  • Support a high-quality pastoral structure ensuring every student can thrive.

Essential:

  • Good English and Maths skills (minimum GCSE Grade 3 or equivalent).

  • Strong understanding of behaviour management policies and safeguarding.

  • Experience working with children or a willingness to develop this through training.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage with students, staff, and parents effectively.

  • Organised, calm under pressure, and able to manage competing priorities.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in a similar pastoral role or school environment.

  • Experience mentoring young people and liaising with parents.
