Job Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the right person to join Birmingham Youth Justice Service as an Assistant Head of Service.

Birmingham is one of the largest Youth Justice Services in England and Wales. Our latest HMIP inspection in 2022 found that the Service had improved since its previous inspection in 2020, but there remains more work to do.

The Service is on a significant development journey to support the achievement of better outcomes for children, victims, caregivers, and communities. You will be joining an organization committed to continuous improvement, striving for excellence, and embracing best practices, innovation, and research. This is a great time to join Birmingham Youth Justice Service as we continue our transformation.

You will be a key member of a dedicated and highly competent senior leadership team, playing a critical role in leading reform across the service and delivering strategic priorities. You will work strategically across partnerships with key stakeholders, ensuring effective resource use and service delivery.

Birmingham Youth Justice Service is committed to embedding inclusive, anti-discriminatory, Child First, and trauma-responsive practices across all aspects of service design and delivery. The successful candidate will demonstrate understanding, experience, and the ability to apply these principles.

You are the right person for this role if you:

  • See beyond the offence and focus on the child
  • Want to address disproportionality and inequality in youth justice
  • Believe behaviour is a form of communication and offending is often symptomatic of experiences
  • Are committed to hearing the voices of children, families, carers, and victims, and integrating this into practice
  • Are passionate, motivated, and enthusiastic about delivering high-quality services
  • Have relevant experience, skills, and expertise as outlined in the person specification
  • Desire to collaborate, learn, innovate, and improve

Required expertise includes:

  • Proven leadership and change management skills
  • Understanding of barriers children face in engaging with Education, Training, and Employment, and strategic partnership approaches to support re-engagement
  • Knowledge of effective research-based interventions in Youth Justice to support social inclusion and community safety
  • Understanding of the legal and statutory framework of Youth Justice, including Youth Court and Out of Court diversions
  • Commitment to collaboration, learning, and driving development

In return, you will receive:

  • Competitive salary and rewards (currently under review)
  • Generous annual leave
  • Additional employee benefits
  • Opportunity to join the Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Support for personal learning and development
  • Excellent career progression opportunities

We are committed to delivering services that are culturally responsive and promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Application deadline: Sunday 4th May @ 23.59hrs
