Job description

We are seeking an experienced and ambitious Assistant Engineering Manager (AEM / Workshop Manager) to join Arriva Wakefield on a full-time, permanent basis.

The role involves assisting the Garage Engineering Manager in running an efficient workshop that meets targets set by TfL, Arriva London, and DVSA. You will oversee service delivery to ensure garages meet their PVR requirements at all times, operate within budget, and adhere to key performance indicators (KPIs) and regulatory standards.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Be the designated person onsite for depot security and ensure all team members adhere to safe working practices and environment standards.
  2. Follow the instructions of the Engineering Manager, undertake tasks as outlined in the Leader Standard Work document, and perform other duties as required.
  3. Lead and supervise the team to ensure the efficient and safe servicing, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and cleaning of vehicles and components to specified standards.
  4. Plan and allocate workload to ensure tasks are balanced and scheduled appropriately. Coordinate with Working Chargehands to maintain on-road engineering performance within targets, ensuring clear communication and data capture.
  5. Ensure team compliance with work instructions, health & safety regulations, quality procedures, and environmental systems.

Requirements:

  • A strong engineering background with proven experience in maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy vehicles, equipment, or machinery, preferably within the Bus/HGV industry.
  • Recognition through a formal apprenticeship or vocational qualification in a relevant mechanical, electrical engineering, or similar field. Alternatively, a degree or diploma in an engineering or vehicle maintenance discipline.
  • Good knowledge of health & safety practices, with the ability to lead by example (IOSH certification preferred).
  • Ability to lead and supervise a team, fostering a safe and effective working environment.
