Job description

About The Role

Balfour Beatty Power T&D are seeking an Assistant Engineering Manager to join the Design and Engineering team to support the successful delivery of the Access Skye Project, one of our critical strategic programmes within the wider transmission portfolio. The role is ideal for individuals with experience in design engineering, project engineering, or engineering management, who bring a solid understanding of electrical construction activities associated with transmission infrastructure. You will support the Engineering Manager and interface with Project Management, Design Delivery teams, external stakeholders, and our client partners. This is an opportunity to gain exposure to a high‑profile programme, working alongside multidisciplinary teams to deliver engineering solutions that are robust, compliant, and aligned with project milestones. The position will require regular travel to the Isle of Skye site. The role supports smart and flexible working arrangements and is open to full‑time, part‑time, or job‑share candidates.

Responsibilities
  • Work with the Engineering Manager and Project Manager to ensure Access Skye design requirements are fully understood, clearly defined, and tracked throughout the project's lifecycle.
  • Coordinate internal and external design teams, ensuring alignment on project scope, design standards, and delivery expectations.
  • Support the integration of D&E services into the overall Access Skye delivery programme, including ensuring early identification of risks, design clashes, scope gaps, or resourcing issues.
  • Monitor progress of assigned design packages and produce timely updates, forecasting and reporting on workload, cost-to-complete, and potential emerging issues.
  • Prepare and issue project status updates, dashboards, or design reports for internal management and external stakeholders.
  • Capture and communicate any variations to the Contract Scope of Work to the PPPE/SPPE and ensure approval routes are followed.
  • Assist in the development and review of detailed design plans, deliverables, and technical documentation aligned to Access Skye requirements.
  • Support optioneering, feasibility assessments, and engineering studies required for substations, overhead lines, cables, and associated enabling works.
  • Specify, quantify, and assess materials, equipment, or solution options to ensure best value for project outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders including Transmission Owner engineering teams, National Grid ESO, SSE, Scottish Power, and DNO partners involved in interface works.
  • Coordinate with environmental, consenting, land, and construction teams to ensure design considerations are integrated early and risks are mitigated.
  • Engage with suppliers, manufacturers, and subject matter experts to ensure technical solutions are robust and compliant with both client and statutory requirements.
Qualifications
  • A relevant engineering degree or equivalent technical experience.
  • Experience with transmission or distribution design engineering, project engineering, or engineering management.
  • Strong project controls capabilities and excellent organisational skills.
  • A good baseline of engineering knowledge across electrical infrastructure projects (substations, OHL, cables, civils, or similar).
  • Familiarity with multi‑discipline design coordination within large infrastructure programmes.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder‑management skills, with the ability to influence and coordinate diverse teams.
Benefits
  • Smart working, giving you more flexibility such as staggered start and finish times, with up to 40% remote working where roles allow.
  • 25 days paid annual leave (pro rata).
  • Family‑friendly policies which include 28 weeks full pay for maternity/adoption leave and four weeks full pay for paternity/partners leave.
  • Pension, share incentive plan, volunteering leave, recognition schemes and other benefits.
