Introduction

Global Journalism is a key team within BBC World Service Languages. It provides high quality journalism and production, creating text, video, and social content that engages audiences worldwide. Our core mission is to support language services with content that helps them cover and explain the world, focusing on audience growth.

The Short video team, part of our department, delivers quick-turnaround social and on-site videos for World Service language services and BBC News. This includes viral videos, breaking news, investigative social cuts, or compelling footage that showcases the world. Our daily videos aim to capture attention and are produced rapidly to grow audiences.

We seek an Assistant Editor with strong editorial judgment, diverse digital video experience, and a keen eye for content performance on various platforms. You should have experience motivating junior staff, signing off on content, and navigating copyright, legal, and editorial policies. Staying updated on social media trends, spotting viral stories, and guiding producers are essential. You should be familiar with BBC's language services, quick editing skills, and social media monitoring tools to ensure our content remains relevant and engaging.

Main Responsibilities
  • Lead the short-form video team’s editorial agenda with support from the wider team.
  • Organize staffing and delegate tasks to develop team members.
  • Evaluate pitches and supervise production processes.
  • Utilize strong editing and subbing skills to enhance captions and headlines.
  • Collaborate across BBC departments to deliver top short videos for language services and share best practices within BBC.
  • Research and pitch trending, viral ideas aligned with audience expectations and editorial guidelines.
  • Stay informed about social video trends and news agendas.
  • Use social media listening tools to identify emerging trends and inform video commissioning.
  • Monitor WS language service websites and social media accounts to identify high-performing stories for sharing.
  • Keep up-to-date with style, verification, copyright, legal, and editorial standards.
  • Guide journalists and editors to ensure high standards of accuracy, verification, impartiality, and legal compliance.
  • Meet tight deadlines and anticipate audience needs within 24-48 hours.
  • Assess footage and sources carefully, maintaining impartiality and reputation.
