This year, Transworld has major plans for its new chapter in non-fiction, with a new focus on its lifestyle publishing growth but also across all three of its non-fiction imprints. We are looking for someone passionate about non-fiction to join us on the journey.

The role

This role will be responsible for supporting, from an editorial, publishing and administrative level, the Non-fiction Publisher, who leads the team, Lauren Whelan in her role and in addition the Doubleday Non-fiction Publisher, Susanna Wadeson -working with them on their non-fiction titles, assisting their acquisitions, and having an oversight of the non-fiction team schedules, supporting the Publisher with the smooth running of the non-fiction lists. We’re open to appointing someone at Assistant Editor level or Editor level.

You’ll be involved in all processes of book production, from acquisition to publication, to lend your hand to the Publisher in helping to turn a seed of an idea or a manuscript into a finished, bestselling product, championing our brilliant books internally and externally and providing exceptional author and agent care and communication at all stages.

Key responsibilities:

  • Managing the internal book process of specified books, including scheduling, completely compiling the jacket and cover briefs and copy where needed, collating proofs (or working with our Managing Editorial team to do so), arranging and working through legal reads, populating Advanced Title Information, liaising with the authors and ghostwriters to agree delivery dates, liaising with Production, designers and freelancers.
  • Working collaboratively with the marketing, publicity, sales and rights teams and being a go-to point person and champion for Non-fiction across the business.
  • Helping to manage often complicated, evolving or fast-paced editorial schedules (and budgets where needed), working with freelancers and the in-house Transworld Managing Editorial and Production teams.
  • Contributing to our meetings with ideas and being engaged with the lifestyle and digital space, popular culture and trends.
  • Supporting the Non-Fiction team where needed on administrative tasks
  • Assisting in reading proposals, writing vision docs, running audience insight and sales comps
  • Delivery-focused with experience in managing projects; strong personal organisation and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.

What you’ll bring

Essential criteria:

  • Passionate about a career in non-fiction Editorial
  • Experience taking mono and colour non-fiction books through the publishing cycle - proven editorial and illustrated publishing skills
  • Demonstrable awareness of and engagement with the non-fiction market - retailers, media, audiences, communities and competitors and all things digital
  • Experience of managing multiple projects at once and confidence to communicate with authors / key stakeholders and internal teams
  • Excellent communication skills and author care
  • Proactive problem-solver, positive mentality with an ability to remain calm in a pressurised, speedy environment
  • Collaborative team player
  • The ability to multitask, be flexible, resourceful and handle competing priorities
  • Highly organised and great attention-to-detail – managing diaries and schedules
  • Good at spotting opportunities for improvement and growth – enthusiastic and curious
