Job description

Our client is a lifestyle and entertainment publication with both a print edition and a strong digital presence, including real-time updates, video content, and coverage of fashion, beauty, celebrity news, and more. They focus on credible reporting and reach millions through their magazine, website, and social platforms.

They are seeking an experienced, sharp, highly-motivated, and organized Assistant Editor with a news background.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about celebrity news, possess a track record of landing exclusives, have a keen eye for visually-stunning layouts, and excel at writing and editing under pressure and tight deadlines.

As Assistant Editor, you will oversee all news coverage, manage the news team and writers, ensure content aligns with the magazine’s tone and style, and stay updated on journalism law.

You should have strong connections with top entertainment PRs and publicists in the UK and US, with examples of recent exclusives and contacts in celebrity, TV, film, and music industries.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the Editor and Deputy Editor with editorial planning, production, and execution of news content.
  2. Cover for the Deputy Editor when unavailable.
  3. Manage the News Editor and oversee news coverage, setting the weekly news agenda.
  4. Coordinate with the Deputy Editor on daily content workflow to meet deadlines and standards.
  5. Enhance the magazine's authority and market position through contacts and exclusives.
  6. Develop new angles on trending stories to stand out.
  7. Monitor analytics to inform content strategy and boost engagement.
  8. Maintain strong relationships with celebrities, PRs, and industry contacts.
  9. Attend entertainment industry events regularly.
  10. Proven ability to break exclusive stories appealing to the audience.
  11. Plan coverage around key entertainment events.
  12. Pitch news ideas daily for online and print, and participate in weekly features meetings.
  13. Coordinate with writers, the picture desk, and contributors for articles and interviews.
  14. Work with the Art Department to produce visually compelling layouts for news articles.
  15. Write engaging headlines and coverlines.
  16. Contribute ideas for news features, special issues, and upcoming content.
  17. Manage social media and digital content to promote articles.
