About The RoleAre you a recent graduate or early-career ecologist with a passion for terrestrial ecology? Do you love the idea of getting outdoors and carrying out fieldwork to help protect Britain’s habitats and wildlife? Are you looking to develop your species ID skills while contributing to meaningful conservation work?
Due to a recent promotion, we’re looking for an enthusiastic Assistant Ecologist to support our busy Terrestrial Ecology team. This is a hybrid role involving home, office and site-based work. We have long-standing contracts to carry our ecological surveys, with work across the South Midlands and South Wales region. From Carmarthenshire, through Worcestershire, Gloucestershire to Oxfordshire.
In this role, you’ll assist in a wide range of terrestrial ecology surveys, including Phase 1 and UKHab habitat surveys, Preliminary Roost Assessments, and protected species work (bats, great crested newts, dormice and more). You’ll also support in the analysis and reporting of ecological data and help produce ecological maps using GIS. As part of a friendly and experienced team, you’ll gain hands-on experience with real-world projects for high-profile clients, while developing a broad skillset that sets you on the path to Consultant Ecologist level.
To be successful in this role, you’ll need:- A degree (or higher) in a relevant environmental or ecological subject
- A passion for the environment, backed by some relevant ecological work experience
- Knowledge of UK wildlife and environmental legislation
- Some field survey experience and confidence in data collection
- Excellent organisational, analysis and report writing skills
- A collaborative mindset and willingness to work flexible, ecological hours (including early mornings, evenings and occasional weekends)
- A full UK driving licence and ability to travel, with some overnight stays
Bonus points if you have:- Experience with GIS tools (QGIS or ArcGIS)
- Botanical ID skills or experience with habitat classification
- Experience in protected species surveys (e.g. bats, GCN, dormice, otters, water voles)
