Locations: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Epsom, Glasgow, Leeds, Peterborough and Warrington.

AtkinsRéalis provides drainage design services to Highway, Rail, Private Developer, Energy and Water markets with some of our key clients being HS2, Highways England and Network Rail along with many of the UK’s water companies. Due to a growing workload, we are keen to strengthen our existing teams.

We require Senior Drainage Engineers to join our teams operating from across the UK. We are looking for strong collaborators, people capable of supporting their local team, but also delivering on remote projects as part of our national Practice.

You will be involved in designing drainage infrastructure, transportation, and private developer projects, with emphasis on highway drainage and development drainage including SuDS. You will also support the leadership and development of our drainage capability.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading drainage design from concept to detailed design and construction, either as stand-alone projects or as part of larger schemes.
  • Promoting digital solutions in drainage design, including full BIM integration.
  • Reviewing and overseeing drainage designs, models, calculations, and drawings to ensure standards and quality assurance.
  • Managing design tasks, delivery, budget, and programme.
  • Mentoring and developing graduates and technicians in drainage.
  • Ensuring compliance with quality, safety, and environmental policies.
  • Building stakeholder relationships to support design and consent processes.
  • Supporting local team development in drainage design capability.
  • Managing interface and technical assurance for designs produced in our Global Design Centre.
  • Championing drainage within multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Mentoring team members and supporting bid preparations, including risk assessments and fee proposals.

Requirements:

  • Professional qualification with ICE, CIWEM, or similar.
  • Ability to design all drainage aspects from concept to detailed design.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic software, 3D design tools, and BIM.
  • Experience in report and specification preparation, data collection, and technical reporting.
  • Client-focused with the ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Project scope, budget, and quality management skills.
  • Flexible, proactive, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Mentoring skills and leadership qualities.
  • Experience with private and public sector clients and procurement methods.
