Contract Type: 12-month fixed term

Salary: £57,000 - £62,000

About the Role

We're looking for a credible, committed education leader to step into a nationally significant role with the NCETM.

As Assistant Director (Targeted Support in Maths), you'll help drive school improvement across England - working with schools that need support the most and helping them get ready to engage meaningfully with the Teaching for Mastery approach.

You'll work closely with the Associate Director, provide strategic leadership to the Maths Hubs Network, and play a central role in shaping how targeted support is delivered, measured, and sustained.

You will:

  • Represent Etio and the NCETM in national and regional settings
  • Lead initiatives that help schools prepare for Teaching for Mastery
  • Co-design and refine a national targeted support framework aligned with EEF and NPQ guidance
  • Guide Maths Hubs in identifying and supporting schools requiring additional development
  • Build capacity in Local Leaders of Maths Education (LLMEs) through professional development
  • Collaborate across NCETM teams to ensure strategy and pedagogy align
  • Contribute to the School Development Lead programme
  • Draft high-quality resources and reports to support delivery and share impact
  • Work with DfE and sector stakeholders to track progress and share success stories

What You'll Bring

Qualified teacher status with strong Maths education expertise

Leadership experience across schools or in a system leadership role

Deep knowledge of Maths pedagogy, including Teaching for Mastery

Skilled communicator, comfortable engaging senior stakeholders

Proven ability to design and deliver impactful CPD

Confident observing teaching, offering feedback, and supporting improvement

Ability to influence, coach, and build strong relationships

Strategic thinker, comfortable using data to inform decisions

Familiarity with national policy and education priorities in England

Self-motivated, thrives in dispersed or remote teams

Desirable

  • Recent experience leading maths improvement across a school, trust, or region
  • Track record of influencing national maths education or contributing to policy
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. ATM, MA)
  • Familiarity with NPQ frameworks and EEF implementation guidance
  • Awareness of international approaches to maths education
