Job description

Make a Difference Where It Matters Most

West Sussex is a county of contrast and opportunity. From our vibrant coastal towns to our rural heartlands, we are proud of our communities and ambitious for the people we serve.

Over the past three years, we’ve laid strong foundations for change in Adult Services. With stable leadership, a clear vision, and a commitment to improvement, we’re now ready to accelerate our transformation. We’re looking for a new Assistant Director (Commissioning) – Adult Social Care to help lead the way.

This is a pivotal role. You’ll provide strategic and operational leadership across all aspects of adult social care commissioning. From shaping local delivery models to leading council-wide programmes on accommodation, care, and support, you’ll be at the heart of how we deliver better outcomes for adults across the county.

You’ll work closely with our Executive Director of Adults Services and Health (DASS), our strong and stable leadership team, and partners across health, housing, and the voluntary sector. You’ll also play a key role in reshaping our relationship with the NHS as we transform our major s75 agreement and build new, integrated ways of working.

We’re looking for someone with deep commissioning expertise, a strong understanding of adult social care, and leadership skills to inspire teams and drive change. You should be confident operating at scale, comfortable with complexity, and committed to co-production and evidence-based practice.

You’ll be joining a council that’s ambitious, supportive, and ready for the next phase. We’re proud of our progress and excited about what’s next.

We’re especially keen to hear from candidates who bring diverse perspectives and lived experience, helping us build a leadership team that reflects the communities we serve.

Join us – and help lead the next chapter of our adult social care transformation.
