Job description

As an Assistant Designer on our Homeware team, you will support the design and development of comprehensive ranges in collaboration with the Buyers and wider trading teams, ensuring that the products and ranges reflect current market trends and meet Matalan's customer needs.

Responsibilities:

1. Conduct market research to identify the latest trends, colours, fabrics, and competitors' ranges.
2. Provide advice and insights on initial samples, ensuring manufactured garments match design specifications.
3. Collaborate with Buyers on costs and margins to ensure ranges are within budget.
4. Visit factories and conduct competitive shopping trips in the UK, USA, and Far East, with reports and feedback to the teams.
5. Occasionally attend fit meetings to ensure the look, fit, shape, and quality of garments are correct, and approve lab dips, trims, and fabrics as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

• Previous experience as an Assistant Designer or a strong Trainee Designer, preferably within a Homeware department.
• Degree in Fashion, Textile, or Graphic Design.
• Advanced skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
• Strong technical and creative design skills, including designing prints and graphics.
• Excellent verbal and communication skills.
