Job Description:

Salary: £28,000
Location: Northampton
Job Type: Perm
Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm (40 hours/week)

The Candidate:

As an Assistant Design Engineer, you will support Design Engineers by creating draft designs and technical drawings using AutoCAD and other design software. You will adhere to company policies and industry standards, assist with value engineering, and help maintain gross margins as predicted by Tendering Engineers. You will participate in client meetings and visit sites regularly to deepen your understanding of the utility industry and installation processes.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in producing compliant designs per customer requirements and standards
• Apply ENA, DNO & IDNO G81 design standards and recommendations
• Help process project-specific cost estimates for variations and contract changes
• Maintain records of project progression in the design database
• Follow company policies and BMS guidelines
• Ensure designs meet NERS, GIRS & WIRS accreditation standards
• Escalate issues promptly to minimize business impact
• Attend site visits to understand routing, equipment, and installation procedures
• Keep a record of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities

Essential Experience & Qualities:

• Willingness to pursue formal qualifications in electrical, gas, or water disciplines
• Experience with AutoCAD (2D)
• Attention to detail and drafting accuracy
• Technical mindset with understanding of calculation methods and equations
• Professional attitude and ability to work under pressure
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
• Knowledge of the utility industry
• Willingness to work towards professional status with IET, IGEM, or IoW
• Ability to identify skill gaps and seek improvement
• Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively
