The Works Delivery Internal Design Team (IDT) provides in-house design services to the Work Delivery Civils Contractor. IDT is involved with projects from inception to completion.

We operate over the Northwest and Central Region, extending from London Euston up to Gretna Green on the Scottish border.

Our base is in Heaton Mersey, South Manchester. The team currently has 15 members.

IDT has won several design awards, including the 'Infrastructure Project of the Year' at the 2023 National Rail Awards.

We undertake a wide variety of projects, including:

  • Bridge Maintenance and Strengthening
  • Design of Retaining Structures
  • Platform Extensions
  • Culvert Lining and Replacement
  • Tunnel Maintenance and Strengthening
  • Embankment and Cutting Stabilisation

There is a healthy workbank extending over CP7, and we aim to take on more projects.

Role: Assistant Design Engineer

You will be involved in producing designs and specifications, supporting engineering development from clarification of remit (start of stage 2) to completion of single option feasibility work and handover into detailed design (end of stage 5). Support will be provided by the Senior Design Engineer.

About the role (External):

What will you be doing?

  1. Analyze development remits, challenge sponsoring engineers and managers, and participate in value management and risk analysis activities.
  2. Develop suitable engineering options, considering safety, reliability, operational capacity, maintainability, ease of construction, and environmental issues. Support engineering excellence by:
  • Securing relevant base data
  • Reviewing standards compliance
  • Using risk evaluation methods (e.g., HAZOP, QRA, LRM, GK/RT/14200)
  • Incorporating lessons learned from past projects
  • Liaising with Network Rail teams
  • Maintain strict change control; evaluate impacts and communicate changes to the client.
  • Participate in selecting a single option for development and prepare necessary reports and drawings.
  • Manage single option design processes.
  • Prepare engineering data packages for detailed design and respond to clarifications.
  • Support GRIP stages 2-5 and perform cross-discipline checks.
  • Manage site visits, including briefing and resource preparation.
  • Identify additional data needs for design development.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior engineers and trainees.

    • Knowledge of Construction Design Management and risk assessment

    Desirable qualifications:

    • HNC or Engineering degree or equivalent
    • Design experience
    • Railway experience (preferred but not essential)
    • Excellent command of English
    • CAD and sketching skills
    • Positive attitude and desire to improve

    The successful candidate is expected to work a minimum of 3 days per week in the office.
