Job summary

Cheshire East Council is seeking an Assistant Data Protection Officer to support the Deputy DPO in advising on UK GDPR, handling data protection matters and improving information governance across the Council.

The role is full-time and fixed-term with hybrid working; you will investigate data protection issues, provide guidance, and promote compliance across services while building strong stakeholder relations.

Qualifications

  • Sound knowledge of UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Experience of providing advice and guidance on data protection matters in a complex organisation.
  • Experience of investigating data protection complaints and/or personal data breaches.
  • The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and use initiative when dealing with a wide range of data protection matters.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Enthusiasm, self-motivation and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Deputy Data Protection Officer in providing advice, guidance and assurance on all aspects of data protection legislation.
  • Investigate data protection complaints and personal data breaches, support DPIAs, and assist with policy development.
  • Provide practical advice to services across the Council and promote good information governance practices.
  • Contribute to training and awareness activities and maintain high standards of data protection across the organisation.

Job description

An exciting opportunity has become available to join the Information Rights Team within Audit, Risk and Assurance as an Assistant Data Protection Officer. This is a full-time, fixed-term position working on a hybrid basis, with the current expectation of attending the office at least one day per week.

This role is central to supporting the Council's commitment to protecting personal information, maintaining public trust and ensuring compliance with data protection legislation.

If you have experience of working with data protection legislation and can work independently, manage competing priorities and use your initiative when dealing with a wide range of data protection matters, we'd love to hear from you.

About the role

As Assistant Data Protection Officer, you will support the Deputy Data Protection Officer in providing advice, guidance and assurance on all aspects of data protection legislation. You will investigate data protection complaints and personal data breaches, support the review of Data Protection Impact Assessments, assist with policy development and provide practical advice and guidance to services across the Council.

You will work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels to promote good information governance practices, support compliance, contribute to training and awareness activities, and help maintain high standards of data protection across the organisation.

The successful candidate will have:
  • Sound knowledge of UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Experience of providing advice and guidance on data protection matters in a complex organisation.
  • Experience of investigating data protection complaints and/or personal data breaches.
