Job summary

Sandwell Council is seeking an Assistant Cook to support the preparation, cooking and serving of high-quality meals in a hygienic kitchen. This hands-on role suits someone who enjoys teamwork and takes pride in helping vulnerable community members.

You will work with the Cook, deputise when needed, help with stock, maintain HACCP standards, and participate in training and performance reviews. Hours are 7:00–11:30, alternating weekends and public holidays, with an enhanced DBS check required.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on kitchen experience preferred.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and support weekend shifts.
  • Knowledge of HACCP and health & safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, cook, and pack meals following menus, recipes, and procedures.
  • Support the Cook and deputise in their absence.
  • Act as Cook during weekend shifts.
  • Assist with stock control and food ordering during the week.
  • Maintain high standards of kitchen hygiene, including cleaning equipment and work areas.
  • Set up and clean dining areas as required.
  • Support and guide kitchen staff, including rotas and training new staff.
  • Ensure compliance with HACCP, food hygiene, and health and safety regulations.
  • Attend training and participate in performance development processes.

Job description

As an Assistant Cook, you will support with the preparation, cooking, and serving of high-quality meals in a hygienic and well-organised kitchen environment. You will play a key role in ensuring meals are produced safely, efficiently, and in line with food hygiene and nutritional standards.

This is a hands-on role in a busy kitchen, ideal for someone who enjoys teamwork, takes pride in their work, and is passionate about supporting vulnerable members of the community.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Preparing, cooking, and packing meals following set menus, recipes, and procedures
  • Supporting the Cook and deputising in their absence
  • Acting as Cook during weekend shifts
  • Assisting with stock control and food ordering when working within the week
  • Maintaining high standards of kitchen hygiene, including cleaning equipment and work areas
  • Setting up and cleaning dining areas as required
  • Supporting and guiding kitchen staff, including assisting with rotas and training new staff
  • Ensuring compliance with HACCP, food hygiene, and health and safety regulations
  • Attending training as required and participating in performance development processes

Hours:7:00-11:30 alternate weekends and public holidays.

Essential Requirement:
  • Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety

An enhanced DBS check will be required for this role.
