Job summary

South Gloucestershire Council is seeking an Assistant Commissioning Officer to coordinate placements and care packages for children and young people, working with care providers to secure high-quality, cost-effective placements.

You will process provider invoices, support commissioning officers, and contribute to service improvement, with interviews on 14 September 2026; role is 18.5 hours/week (Mon/Tue all day, Wed morning), salary pro-rata.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 qualification in social care, healthcare or business studies.
  • Experience coordinating and contracting social care or similar services.

Job description

How you'll make a difference

The Children and Young People’s Commissioning team commissions and procures a wide range of services that support children, young people and families across South Gloucestershire, including those in the council's care.

As an Assistant Commissioning Officer, you will play a key role in arranging placements and care packages that help children and young people achieve the best possible outcomes. Working closely with social care professionals and service providers, you will support service delivery, build positive relationships and contribute to the continuous improvement of services across the authority.

What you will be doing
  • It will be your responsibility to coordinate and administer services by working closely with care providers to secure the most appropriate, high-quality and cost-effective placements for children and young people.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues, partners, carers, children and young people, you will play an important role in ensuring commissioned services meet individual needs and deliver positive outcomes.
  • You will process provider invoices and respond to finance-related queries, ensuring payments are handled efficiently and accurately.
  • Supporting commissioning officers and managers across the wider partnership, you will contribute to the continuous development and improvement of services, helping to achieve better outcomes for children, young people and their families.
What we need from you
  • It is essential that you hold a Level 3 qualification, ideally in social care, healthcare or business studies.
  • You will have experience working within an organisation that commissions and contracts social care or similar services.
  • We are looking for someone who can demonstrate a flexible and adaptable approach, with the ability to work across a range of service areas and respond effectively to changing priorities.
  • Given the nature of this work, you must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, to enable you to build and maintain positive working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, providers, partners and customers.
What you need to know
  • This role is 18.5 hours per week, working all day on Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday morning.
  • Your salary is pro-rata to hours worked.
