Job description

Defra group Commercial is looking to appoint an Assistant Commercial Officer to the Monitoring And Related Services (MARS) commercial team within our Environmental Goods and Services spend category. This will be a key support role for the team, which could also include leading on your own procurements. This role is ideal for those starting their career in the commercial/procurement profession or looking to build on existing experience.

About Defra Group Commercial

Part of Defra, the central Government Department responsible for growing the rural economy, improving the environment, and safeguarding animal and plant health, DGC provides commercial services within the Defra Network. The role involves assisting customers and commercial teams to deliver value effectively and innovatively, meeting customer outcomes, objectives, and Spending Review targets. Responsibilities include awarding and monitoring supplier contracts in accordance with Defra's policies, ensuring value for money, and applying Commercial DNA principles.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Support project delivery, procurements, and contract/supplier management, providing functional input to improve ways of working and efficiency.
  2. Explain Commercial guidance to operational teams to ensure compliance with policies and legislation.
  3. Stay updated on legislation and best practices to inform priorities.
  4. Maintain effective relationships with operational teams and customers, providing support and understanding issues.
  5. Assist in delivering results on time, within quality standards and budget, supporting environmental goals.
  6. Manage own resources effectively, including sourcing and contract management tools.
  7. Contribute to category plans and develop market knowledge.
  8. Provide administrative support to the team and ensure efficient systems are in place.
  9. Support contract delivery, identifying and managing sustainable impacts and opportunities.
  10. Advise on commercial issues and governance, and contribute to savings targets.
  11. Assist with complex procurements, research, and analysis to support sourcing strategies.
  12. Support market engagement exercises and prepare tender documents.
  13. Manage supplier relationships and support contract management, including more complex contracts.
  14. Participate in stakeholder meetings and support commercial colleagues.
  15. Monitor and update commercial and contract management systems.
  16. Pursue continuous professional development to enhance commercial skills and knowledge.
