About The Role

We are looking for an Assistant Civil Engineer to support the Port Engineering Management and wider team in the planning, supervision, and successful delivery of civil engineering and building projects across the Port of Tilbury. This role will ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards while meeting the expectations of clients and stakeholders.

Key responsibilities:

Produce contract specifications and tender documentation (including Pre-tender Health & Safety Plans) for contractor tendering

Prepare accurate and properly costed designs and project estimations

Maintain regular on-site presence and liaise with contractors to promptly resolve any arising issues

Apply consistent and effective problem-solving to maintain project schedules and budgets

Run and manage the inspection of works programme to ensure all building and civil engineering works meet required standards and are properly recorded

Monitor budgets by reviewing valuations and variations to contract

Attend regular progress meetings with stakeholders and agree on key tasks to meet project deadlines

Prepare well-defined, financially viable, and legally sound contract documents before project commencement

Provide regular progress reports and updates to Port Engineering Management, highlighting any delays or required actions

Oversee health and safety compliance including CDM 2015 duties as Client, Principal Designer, and Designer

Prepare Pre-Contract Information files, review Contractors’ Construction Phase Plans, and ensure accuracy of Health & Safety files including “As Built” drawings

Control project site activities for compliance with specifications, tender documents, programme, and budget constraints

Manage multiple projects simultaneously

Use in-house AutoCAD (following training) to interpret, modify, and prepare technical drawings and layouts in support of project planning and delivery

What are we looking for?

We’re seeking a motivated and proactive individual who can manage multiple tasks with attention to detail, work well independently and collaboratively, and bring a strong understanding of civil engineering construction methods. You’ll be someone who is confident in liaising with contractors and stakeholders, and who is driven to see projects through to successful completion.

Skills and Qualifications:

Extensive knowledge of building and civil engineering construction methods, ideally from a major contractor or client organisation

Good working knowledge of Health and Safety regulations, including CDM 2015

Ability to work independently and within a team

Working knowledge of AutoCAD is advantageous

Ideally degree qualified, or HNC/equivalent with suitable experience

Desired Criteria

  • Degree level qualified, or HNC / equivalent with suitable experience

Required Criteria

  • Strong knowledge of building and civil engineering construction methods, with experience ideally gained from a major contractor or client organisation
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety regulations, including CDM 2015, and ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • In a commutable distance due to occasional on-call requirements during projects
