Job description

Job Title: Asset / Drainage Engineer – Railway

Type: Contract

Location: Central London

Day rate: Dependant on Experience

I am looking for a skilled asset engineer who has experience within drainage policies and standards.

The Role:

This role involves managing drainage inspections, maintenance, and renewal activities, ensuring alignment across teams. It includes developing investment plans, overseeing drainage projects, and collaborating with external stakeholders on flood management. Essential qualifications include civil or structural engineering experience and knowledge of drainage policies.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the requirements for inspecting drainage assets, and carry out evaluations and assessments. Ensure compliance with examination and assessment standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee cross-functional drainage activities, ensuring alignment, optimisation, and prioritisation of inspection, maintenance, and renewal tasks across asset management teams.
  • Develop route-specific plans for drainage management, prioritising investments. Oversee the incorporation of all investment projects into appropriate programs, track progress, and manage any approved changes to the plans.
  • Provide drainage guidance and support to other departments, reviewing proposed work to ensure cross-disciplinary, cross-functional, and external stakeholder issues are addressed.
  • Lead collaboration with national organisations, local authorities, flood management authorities, and other external parties at the route level on flood management and drainage strategies.
  • Assist the Route Asset Manager by supporting business cases and sponsoring drainage engineering renewal projects. Prepare remits for investment projects and review the technical progress, ensuring renewal needs are met and any changes are documented and approved.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of drainage systems, monitor their condition and performance trends, and recommend necessary actions.
  • Participate in and support investigations into drainage-related incidents.
  • Define and implement control measures for situations where planned interventions are postponed.
  • Effectively hand over completed drainage renewal projects to Maintenance, providing all necessary specifications and documentation.
  • Assist the Route Asset Manager in the route water management groups, developing long-term strategies for drainage and water management, addressing seasonal challenges, and contributing to national drainage standards.

Essential requirements:

  • Possess a HNC/HND or an equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Comprehensive understanding of drainage policies and industry standards.
  • Experience in infrastructure drainage, including inspection, assessment, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of safety management systems and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations.

Desirable requirements:

  • Degree in a relevant subject
  • Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer
  • Member of a relevant professional institution
