Teaching Assistant – Aspiring Youth Criminal Justice Worker - Mental Health - Dorking

Would you like to work with young people who need support with their social, emotional, and mental health? Do you aspire to work in youth criminal justice? If so, then this role is for you.

The School: The school is near Dorking and supports children aged 9-16 with learning and behavioral needs due to social, emotional, and mental health challenges. All students have a designated Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) outlining their specific needs. The school provides a safe environment for children with high anxiety levels, which can lead to focus issues and challenging behaviors. Therapies such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, music, speech, and language therapies are available as part of the EHCP. The curriculum team collaborates closely with therapists to ensure appropriate physical and emotional support.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing assistance and supervision for children’s behavior during the school day and supporting their learning and participation in class.
  • Working with a class, small groups, or individual learners, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Encouraging social skills development and supporting students’ individual needs.
  • Helping to build confidence and motivation.
  • Participating in team meetings and training programs as an active team member.
  • Maintaining progress records.

Requirements:

  • An Undergraduate Degree, preferably in Psychology or Criminology.
  • Knowledge or keen interest in learning and behavioral needs.
  • Good education levels in English and Maths; A Levels are preferable.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a caring attitude.

Summary:

  • Roles: Youth Criminal Justice, Learning Mentor, Behaviour Mentor, Teaching Assistant.
  • Rate: £83 to £90 daily (5-day week, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm).
  • Settings: Special needs schools, mainstream with specialist provision – mental health, trauma, SEN.
  • Start date: September 2024, depending on availability.
