Aseptic Services Manager and Deputy Associate Chief
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

An exceptional opportunity has arisen to provide leadership and quality sign-off for the design, build, and validation of a purpose-built Paediatric Cancer and ATMP facility at St Thomas' Hospital, opening in September 2026. The role involves leading the core functions of the new unit and the existing Guy's Cancer Centre chemotherapy and advanced therapy facility, with overall responsibility for the services provided.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide technical leadership for all aspects of chemotherapy (including clinical trials) and advanced therapies services at St Thomas' and Guy's Cancer Centre, and Guy's Pharmacy Containment Suite.
  • Lead, develop, and evaluate a comprehensive aseptic service covering adult and paediatric chemotherapy, advanced therapies, and aseptic manufacturing, aligning with objectives set with relevant stakeholders.
  • Strategically develop aseptic services within and outside the Trust, in line with NHS regional and national priorities.
  • Manage research and development within aseptic services, ensuring projects are delivered on time in collaboration with clinical trials teams.

What you'll be doing:

  • Leading technical aspects of the new unit's design and operations.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory and quality standards.

Job responsibilities

Phase 1 Project Implementation

  • Lead and support the technical project team, deputize as needed.
  • Prepare and approve procedures and validation documents.
  • Coordinate with the Transformation Manager to meet project timelines.
  • Select contractors, support procurement, and review tenders.
  • Report on project progress to stakeholders.
  • Oversee validation activities and review documentation.
  • Develop start-up plans and ensure integration with existing services.
  • Represent the facility in inspections and provide project updates.
  • Coordinate with clinical teams to ensure service readiness and capacity planning.
  • Manage new product introduction and process validation.
  • Develop strategies for a robust manufacturing workforce.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Active registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council without restrictions.
  • Higher degree (e.g., MSc) in pharmaceutical technology, quality assurance, or equivalent experience.
Experience
  • Senior management experience in aseptic facilities.
  • Experience managing clinical trial operations and audits per GMP/GCP.
  • Experience in designing, building, and commissioning aseptic facilities.
  • Experience expanding technical services to meet patient needs and reduce risks.
Knowledge
  • Contamination control strategies within aseptic services.
  • Knowledge of EudraLex, MHRA, QAAPs, and pharmacopoeial requirements.
  • Legislation related to medicines (e.g., HMR 2012/1916).
  • Advanced understanding of isolators and laminar airflow technology.
  • Validation requirements for pharmaceutical facilities and equipment.
  • Best practices in the governance and preparation of AT(I)MPs.
