The Church of England is seeking an artist to join the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for the remainder of this quinquennium (until the end of 2027). The Care of Cathedrals Measure 2011 specifies that this shall be ‘a painter, sculptor or other artist, with experience of work for cathedral or other churches’. The appointment is made by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, after consultation with the President of the Royal Academy.
We particularly welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, including women, people of global majority heritage, LGBTQIA+, younger individuals, people with disabilities, and from all faith and social backgrounds. Our goal is to remove barriers to diversity and inclusion as part of our Vision and Strategy for the next decade, aligning with our fourth Mark of Mission: “To transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation.” We believe that diverse voices lead to more robust and informed decision-making, reflecting the communities the Church serves.
The Commission's main duties are to ensure that the Church of England’s cathedrals are cared for and conserved to the highest standards, maintaining public confidence in their stewardship, and balancing conservation with the cathedrals’ roles as seats of diocesan bishops and centers of worship and mission.
The Commission promotes the best and most imaginative in contemporary art and design. New and creative works that respond to the historic character of the buildings can greatly enhance the spiritual meaning and enjoyment of cathedrals.
Candidates will be shortlisted and interviewed by a diverse panel representing the Church of England. The appointee may be reappointed for up to two additional five-year terms.
Working hours: Six meetings per year, typically in Westminster, with online attendance possible in exceptional circumstances. Meetings start at 12 noon and usually conclude by 4 pm. Members are also expected to participate in visits to cathedrals, which occur no more than twice a month. Attendance at visits is encouraged but not mandatory for all visits.
