Job description

We are seeking a passionate andproactive General Practitioner dedicated to addressing significant healthinequalities and managing health disparities within our diverse Indo-Pakistaniand Roma communities. This is an innovative role which combines elements oftraditional provision of clinical Primary Care but with an additional emphasison community outreach and tackling health inequity in our practicepopulation. The role will be supportedand mentored by senior GP leaders who will also provide exposure and learningopportunities for the candidate in working in a managerial role in an NHS Trustand will be appealing to newly qualified GPs who are interested in developingtheir skills in potential portfolio roles.

This position will designed to attract a GP who is not only skilled but also deeply committed to understandinf and actively working to reduce health inequalities and manage health disparities within our Indo-Pakinstani and Roma communities. We strongly encourage applications from candidates who are passionate about equitable healthcare and have a genuine interest in engaging with and supporting these underserved popularities.

This role will be on a fixed-term contract until 31st March 2026, with the possibility to extend.

Main duties of the job

This crucial role will involveproviding comprehensive primary care services with a strong emphasis onunderstanding and overcoming the specific barriers these communities face inaccessing and benefiting from healthcare. The post-holder will focus onprevalent long-term conditions, tackle taboo health issues, support individualsexperiencing domestic abuse, and proactively engage with community networkswithin both the Indo-Pakistani and Roma populations. Collaboration withexisting practice staff, community leaders, and partner organisations will beessential to build trust, improve health literacy, and ensure equitable accessto high-quality, culturally competent healthcare for these underserved groups.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide a full range of general medical servicesto registered patients, with a particular focus on understanding and addressingthe unique health needs of individuals from Indo-Pakistani and Roma heritages.
  • Develop and implement targeted management plansfor prevalent long-term conditions within these communities, notablyhypertension and lipid management in the Indo-Pakistani population (consideringgenetic predispositions) and other relevant conditions prevalent within theRoma community.
  • Proactively address taboo health areas such assmoking and alcohol use within both communities, employing culturally sensitiveapproaches to identify hidden habits and provide appropriate support,particularly for women within the Indo-Pakistani community and considering thespecific cultural contexts within the Roma community.
  • Identify and support patients experiencingdomestic abuse, demonstrating a deep understanding of the cultural barriers todisclosure within both Indo-Pakistani and Roma communities and providing accessto culturally appropriate resources and safeguarding pathways.
  • Conduct regular, proactive community outreachspecifically tailored to building trust and rapport within both Indo-Pakistaniand Roma communities, engaging with mosques, temples, Gurdwaras, Roma communitygroups, and other relevant projects to promote health and wellbeing.
  • Provide sensitive and non-judgmental care toindividuals navigating issues related to sexuality and sex before marriage,with a nuanced understanding of the diverse religious and cultural contextswithin the Indo-Pakistani and Roma communities, ensuring access to appropriateadvice and services, including contraception where needed.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patientrecords, paying particular attention to recording relevant cultural and socialfactors impacting health.
  • Participate in practice meetings, clinicalgovernance activities, and continuing professional development, with a focus onlearning about the specific health needs and cultural contexts of the Indo-Pakistaniand Roma communities.
  • Contribute to and provide written reports for anNHS Trust environment and beyond to report on the progress of the role and itsoutcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with other healthcareprofessionals, community health workers, and interpreters to ensure culturallyappropriate care.
  • Contribute to the development of culturallyspecific health promotion materials and initiatives targeted at both theIndo-Pakistani and Roma communities.
  • Adhere to all relevant NHS guidelines, practicepolicies, and ethical standards, with a strong commitment to reducing healthdisparities.
Person Specification
Knowledge and Expertise
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to build rapport and trust with patients from diverse and potentially marginalized cultural backgrounds, including Indo-Pakistani and Roma individuals;
  • Exceptional cultural sensitivity and awareness, with the ability to navigate the complex and diverse cultural and religious beliefs and practices within both Indo-Pakistani and Roma communities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, including collaborating with community outreach workers and interpreters.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development, with a willingness to learn about the specific health needs and cultural contexts of the Indo-Pakistani and Roma communities.
  • Understanding of and commitment to safeguarding principles, with specific awareness of the barriers to reporting abuse within these communities.
  • Language skills relevant to the local Indo-Pakistani communities (e.g., Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi) or knowledge of Romani language and cultural nuances.
  • Understanding of local health and social care pathways relevant to these communities.
Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
  • Inclusion on the NHS England GP Performers List.
  • MRCGP qualification as newly qualified GP with no prior substantive post.
Experience
  • Demonstrable commitment to addressing health inequalities and managing health disparities in underserved communities.
  • A strong understanding of the social, cultural, and economic factors that contribute to health inequalities within Indo-Pakistani and Roma communities in the UK.
  • Experience in managing common long-term conditions, particularly hypertension and lipid management, with an awareness of genetic predispositions within the Indo-Pakistani population.
  • Experience or a strong demonstrable interest in engaging in proactive community outreach activities specifically targeting Indo-Pakistani and/or Roma communities.
  • Experience in addressing taboo health areas such as smoking and alcohol use within Indo-Pakistani and/or Roma communities.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the cultural factors surrounding domestic abuse within Indo-Pakistani and/or Roma communities and experience in providing culturally appropriate support.
  • Awareness of the cultural and religious sensitivities related to sexuality and sex before marriage within Indo-Pakistani and/or Roma communities.
  • Established relationships or experience working with community organizations and/or leaders within the Indo-Pakistani and/or Roma communities in the local area.
