Overview

The Army is a major part of the Ministry of Defence, employing around 12,000 Civil Servants across about 300 locations, supporting the 110,000 regular and reserve soldiers. The Civil Service workforce is diverse with many functions and professions.

The Field Army Operational Research Branch (ORB) uses analytical techniques to support better decision making. The ORB’s Operational Analysis team supports the Field Army on exercises and operations, deploying in support of Field Army and NATO formations, in the UK or overseas.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Role and Responsibilities

As a Deployable Operational Analyst, you will be a member of the ORBs Operational Analysis Team. This role provides opportunities to work embedded within British Army formation Headquarters. You will deploy on exercises/operations to lead the provision of operational analysis to support planning and decision-making with formations such as 1st (UK) Division, 3rd (UK) Division and HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. Your time will be split between desk-based work (approximately 60%) and deployed work on exercises/operations with the Army (approximately 40%).

  • Deploy on exercises and operations (including planning events) to provide OA advice and support to Field Army decision making. This may involve shift work, extended days, field conditions and collaboration with analysts from industry and across government.
  • Work as part of a team in support of a lead analyst. Use the full range of Land deployable OA tools and methods.
  • Capture requirements for analytical support and provide timely responses using tools and bespoke analytical methods. Present results concisely to military stakeholders in written and verbal briefs.
  • Establish and maintain suitable pre-deployment qualifications and be ready to deploy on operations.
  • Represent HQ LWC when liaising with the Field Army and when working on OA tasks delivered by external suppliers. This may include sharing Land OA knowledge or supervising outputs.
  • Operate common analytical methods across areas such as statistical modelling, data mining, analytics and visualisation.
Requirements
  • You must have or be able to attain Developed Vetting (DV) clearance.
  • You will meet pre-deployment training standards, including passing a CODA medical once in post and maintaining a basic level of fitness.
  • Regular travel, including overseas, to attend training exercises and courses, with the ability to travel as needed.
  • You must have a degree (preferably STEM) or extensive experience in Military Operational Research, and experience applying analytical techniques to support decision making.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a military environment and/or with a military customer.
  • Experience applying Operational Analysis techniques.
  • Member of a relevant professional body (e.g. The Operational Research Society).

  • Salary: £36,530 plus the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme (£10,582 contribution by the MOD).
