Crown Prosecution Service - South East is delighted to advertise the role of Area Advocacy Clerking Manager.

As the Area Advocacy Clerking Manager, you lead the Advocacy Clerking Team, overseeing training, workload allocation, day-to-day operations, and performance management. You are responsible for ensuring the delivery of efficient and effective clerking processes, while acting as the central point of contact for stakeholder engagement and relationship management.

You provide line management for the Advocacy Clerking Manager within the Advocacy Clerking Unit and demonstrate strong leadership across all aspects of Crown Advocate Unit performance. This includes supporting and driving the successful implementation of major change initiatives and continuous improvement strategies.

You play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering strategic change, working closely with internal and external stakeholders to meet the evolving needs of the business. You foster productive partnerships with key Criminal Justice System stakeholders, including the Bar, Chambers, and HMCTS, to ensure a high standard of service delivery.

Your responsibilities also include ensuring advocates are instructed in line with the Crown Prosecution Service Briefing Principles and the joint Crown Prosecution Service–Bar Diversity and Inclusion Statement, promoting fair, inclusive, and representative briefing practices. You manage the Crown Prosecution Service’s digital clerking systems, using data and reports to drive engagement, monitor performance, and support ongoing improvement across the unit.

The Crown Prosecution Service is based in England and Wales. You must be aged 18 before starting in this role. The start date is expected to be 8-12 weeks after the application deadline.

Job Description

Your roles and responsibilities:

  • The role is the visible and proactive focal point for the Area’s Advocacy Clerking Team.
  • Stakeholder engagement and key regular liaison role with other core teams in the business, for briefing principles compliance, data recording, succession planning and business need.
  • You proactively building and maintaining good working relationships with Barristers Chambers, HMCTS and other Criminal Justice partners.
  • You communicate a clear vision and direction, with clear accountabilities and decision- making guidance. You are an active member of the Area senior management team, contributing to the development and delivery of Area Business and strategic plans ensuring that team issues are represented.
  • You proactively manage and ensure deployment of Advocacy Clerking Managers is in line with CPS strategies, ensuring standards of performance, conduct, attendance are managed in line with Service’s HR procedures and policies. Taking an active and considered approach to promoting self-development of staff within the team, providing support either collectively or on an individual basis where there are particular areas of concern.
  • You lead the team through periods of change setting a clear vision of what the Area is trying to achieve and involves staff fully in delivery and change implementation.
