Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Archivist and Collections Engagement Co-ordinator to join the Communications and Engagement Department at the John Innes Centre, supporting cutting-edge science.

The role

The JI Collections include:

  • The John Innes Archives: over 300 years of history related to the Innes Family, plus Institute and scientific records from 1910 to the present.
  • Special Collections: including the JIF Rare Books (dating back to 1511), the History of Genetics Library, and annotated libraries of William Bateson and Cyril Darlington.

The post holder will manage these collections, lead projects and activities to enable engagement and use by internal and external users, develop and deliver collaborative outreach activities, and process new accessions. They should have a keen interest in the history of science and be confident in digital preservation and cataloguing.

This role involves primarily independent work within the Communications and Engagement team, with close links to the Norwich Bioscience Institutes Library. It includes managing collections, digital catalogues, and developing systems for digital records, especially born-digital content.

Significant on-site work in Norwich is expected, with options for hybrid working.

The ideal candidate

The candidate should have:

  • A formal qualification or equivalent experience in digital preservation and archiving.
  • Knowledge of physical and digital preservation techniques.
  • Experience in research projects, evaluation, and dissemination of outputs.
  • Notable experience as a digital archivist, curator, or museum professional.
  • Experience collaborating with external partners.
